Last Saturday the Vernon Roarin' Lion Band competed in the UIL Region 7 Marching Contest. The band earned an Excellent Rating (Division 2) from all three judges. That is the second-highest rating a band can receive. Band Director Jeremiah Hastings said the band performed one of its best-sounding shows of the year! He added that he and Assistant Band Director Matthew Golden are very proud of the students' hard work, growth and performance this marching season and look forward to what they will achieve throughout the rest of the year and beyond!

Our Vernon ISD Fall Break is officially underway. We hope everyone has a great loooong weekend and we can't wait to see everyone back in their classrooms on Tuesday!!


On Monday, our VMS Life Skills students were among others from VISD who visited the Sweet Pickins Pumpkin Patch in Altus. From the photos, they had a blast sliding down the pipe slide, digging in the corn bin and playing all the pumpkin games.











VISD is participating in the Texas Education Agency's special education Differentiated Monitoring & Support process, and that includes a survey for anyone associated with the district -- parent, teacher, staff, and administrator. Last Saturday our Roarin' Lion Band competed in the Seymour Marching Festival. The band received a Superior Rating (1) for music and an excellent rating (2) for marching!! The band also received the caption for Best Auxiliary at the competition. Band Director Jeremiah Hastings said he and assistant band director Matthew Golden were very proud of the band's performance at the festival. The Roarin' Lion Band will compete in the UIL Region 7 Marching Contest this Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls. Vernon is scheduled to take the field at 9:50 a.m. GOOD LUCK BAND!!!!






Thanksgiving is 6 weeks away, but it's not to early to start training for the VHS Turkey Trot!! The 5K Turkey Trot will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, at Lion Stadium. There will be a Kids' Fun Run that starts at 9 a.m., with the 5K Turkey Trot set to start at 9:15 a.m. The deadline to register and secure a t-shirt is Nov. 13. The event is sponsored by Texas Farm Bureau Insurance in Vernon. The event is hosted by the Vernon High School National Honor Society and Student Council. All proceeds from the event benefit VISD at-risk youth.


Next week, VMS will be decked out in pink for the Pink Out Pep Rally that will be held at 3:20 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24, prior to th junior high football game against Bowie. VMS students and staff, wear your pink proudly next Thursday!!

The 8th grade students in Mrs. Kelly Boswell's science classes have been learning about Newton's 3 Laws of Motion. As a project, teams of two students each designed a Newton's Cradle to demonstrate Newton's 3rd law of motion (action-reaction). Other teachers had a chance to judge all the entries and cast their vote. The winners were:

Friday's district-wide dress day theme was construction worker to go along with the Lions football pep rally theme "Wreck the Yellowjackets." Our VMS students joined the fun, as there were plenty of construction workers walking the halls at VMS.








Next week Vernon ISD has a short school week. We will have classes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and then dismiss school for our Fall Break. Our Fall Break is from Oct. 17 thru Oct. 21. We hope everyone has a great, relaxing time during the time away from school, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on our campuses and in offices on Tuesday, Oct. 22.


A few special awards were handed out yesterday at our Child Nutrition Services monthly meeting. Candy Cox received the September Employee of the Month award, while campus monthly achievement honors went to Karina Lira, McCord; Carmela Fuentes, Vernon Elementary; Luisa Zambrano, Middle School; and Yirian Ramirez, High School.
Those recognized for having perfect attendance for September were: Renea Branin, Amelia Chavez; Candy Cox; Amelia Escobedo; Carmela Fuentes; Alejandra Haines; Dorothy Mathis; Faye Montes; Beth Newton, Emma Ochoa; Marguerita Ramirez; and Yirian Ramirez.


QUICK REMINDER -- Tomorrow is a Vernon ISD early release Friday for students.


Tyrone McBride and Crystal Ruelas were crowned King and Queen of the 2024 VMS Fall Festival during last night's festivities. Both students are in the 8th grade. The boy and girl from each grade who sold the most Fall Festival raffle tickets represented their grade in the Fall King and Queen Court. Then, students votes selected the King and Queen.


The 7th & 8th grade football teams travel to Boyd Thursday for games with their Yellowjacket opponents. Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.vancoevents.com/us/eventlist/boyd
And, tickets can also be purchased at the gate, where it is cash only.
