An evening of Meet The Teacher events was capped off last night at Leo Brittain Field at Lion Stadium with the Meet The Lions, sponsored by the Vernon Athletic Booster Club. Varsity members of the tennis, cross country, football and volleyball teams were introduced, along with cheerleaders and members of the drill team and Roarin' Lion Band. There was a good crowd on hand to cheer on the athletes and students.

Members of the VHS Class of 2025 gathered at Lion Stadium this morning for Senior Sunrise on the First Day of school. Vernon High School is excited to have all of our students back and we're looking forward to a great 2024-25 school year.

Incoming VHS freshmen were greeted by the drill team and cheerleaders today as they entered the high school for Freshmen Orientation. VHS administrators went over different policies with the freshmen, and upperclassmen spoke to the group about the variety of organizations there is to join and participate in. The freshmen also received their class schedules and toured the school as they found their locker and their classrooms.

Here is the procedure for dropping students off at school in the morning and picking them up after school. We hope YOU are excited as we are to get this 2024-25 school year underway!! See YOU tomorrow!!

Tomorrow is the First Day of School!!! Here is the August Cafeteria Menu for our campuses. Please remember all VISD students receive free breakfast and lunch through our cafeterias.

VISD hosted the KAUZ Channel 6 Weather Tracker team Monday evening for the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts. The special guest for both newscasts was VISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward. The 5 p.m. interview and weather forecast was broadcast from the Vernon High School Media Center, with the 6 p.m. edition being broadcast from Leo Brittain Field at Lion Stadium, the new home for KAUZ's Vernon weather camera.

The Lady Lions opened their 2024 volleyball season at home late night, as they hosted Christ Academy. Unfortunately, the outcome didn't favor the Lady Lions, but they will be right back on the court this evening hosting Benjamin at D.O. Fulton Gym. The junior varsity match starts at 5 p.m., with the varsity set to take the court at approximately 6 p.m.

Today's KAUZ Channel 6 weather forecast during the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscast will be live from the campus of Vernon High School and will feature an interview with VISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward. Be sure and tune in!

Last year, Vernon ISD started using a new parent-teacher communication app called Rooms. We had many of our parents sign up and use Rooms with the teachers of their children. With the new year, we wanted to remind you to sign up if you did not last year or if your student is new to our district.
Due to last year being our first year with the program, we had some "growing pains" and have worked hard to address them. We look forward to a smooth process this school year. Please see some notes/tips below:
1) You will download the Vernon ISD app from your App Store or Play Store on your phone.
2) If you are new to the district, you may not have access until after the first day of school.
3) Please note that you will not see the classes for your students until the first day of school, even if they were here last year.
4) If you want more information on how to use Rooms, please visit this page created for parents: https://bit.ly/VISDParentRooms
If you have additional questions about Rooms after looking at the webpage, or you cannot access Rooms, please feel free to email chantilly.sweet@visdtx.org. Please include your name and the names of all of your children.

Vernon ISD has once again qualified to operate the Community Eligibility Program under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program for the new school year. Schools who qualify serve breakfast and lunch to all students at no charge.

Our VHS cheerleaders have set the themes for our football pep rallies, and have an entire week of activities planned for Homecoming. Our cheerleaders encourage all campuses to participate so we can show our Lion Spirit throughout the district.

Our Lions play their first scrimmage this week, which means we're getting closer and closer to the 2024 season opener on Aug. 30. Here's the 2024 football schedule and note some "Special Nights":
-- Sept. 6 is Homecoming
-- Oct. 4 is Michael Jackson night with a special halftime dance routine
-- Oct. 25 is Elementary Dance Night
-- Nov. 8 is Senior Night

There was madness at Leo Brittain Field at LIon Stadium Friday night as the Lions held a Midnight Madness practice to wrap up their first week of two-a-days. This coming Friday the Lions will finally get to square off against someone not wearing maroon and white, as they face Lamesa in their first scrimmage of the year. The scrimmage will be played in Abilene. Vernon's second scrimmage is Thursday, Aug. 22, in Holliday, and the Lions open the regular season Friday, Aug. 30, taking on the Bulldogs in Burkburnett.

The Lions picked up four victories in dual matches over the weekend. On Friday, the Lions played at home and defeated Borger and Pampa. They were on the road Saturday and dropped Lubbock Cooper Liberty and Shallowater.

Vernon ISD wrapped up the week of teacher professional development this morning with a Convocation for all district employees. Vernon ISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward was the speaker for the Convocation. He presented how VISD can take the manifesto Phil Knight used to build his successful company, Nike, and apply it to build a successful school district.

Returning Vernon ISD students need to register every school year. If you haven't registered your child for the 2024-25 school year, please use the Skyward portal to do so. We are just 6 days away from the first day of school and it makes that first day run smoother if students have registered before they arrive on their campus to start the new school year. If you need to register a returning student, or enroll a new student, you can find information at www.vernonisd.org and click on the Student and Parent Resources button.

Freshmen please remember your VHS Orientation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 13, the day before school starts. Orientation will begin at 1 p.m. You will learn about our high school policies and procedures, and about our fun organizations and activities that you can be a part of. You will also receive your class schedule!! Make sure you're there -- 1 p.m., Tuesday, for Freshmen Orientation.

Today was Day 3 of 7 Professional Development Days for our Vernon ISD teachers and paraprofessionals as we prepare for the 2024-25 school year. Teachers became students today as they moved from classroom to classroom to attend sessions covering a variety of topics. Session topics included: Classroom Management for Elementary; Classroom Management for Secondary; Dyslexia; Enrichment for High Achievers; the Instructional Cycle; and Promethean Board/GoGuardian.

To maintain and keep our football and track facility in the best condition possible, the public will no longer have 24/7 access to the facility. This will take effect on Aug. 14. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please remember there is a walking trail at Roy Orbison Park and Allingham Park, as well as Wilbarger General Hospital.
