Students in Mrs. Inman's 4th grade Social Studies class wrapped up their project on Native Americans Friday by presenting the dioramas they made and giving a presentation to their class on the tribe they researched. Each student researched an Indian tribe native to Texas. In their research, they answered questions such as what area of Texas the tribe lived in; what tools the tribe used; what they wore; what they ate; and what type of structures they live in. I am sorry it is late notice but I wanted to let you know my classes are presenting their indian dioramas today from 9:45-11:35 and 1:45-3:35 if you have some time to come snap some pictures. Before we went on Fall Break, an election was held for Student Council officers. Elected as officers of the 2024-25 Student Council were: Isla Streit, president; Keely Jones, vice president; Gavin Bayer, treasurer; and Nilianna Hines, secretary. Also serving on the Student Council are Keegan Coley, Mathius Leija, Xavier Gomez, D'Angelo Galvan, Braylee Knight, Parker Ford, Xavier Sanders, and Aiden Hernandez.

Last Wednesday, in celebration of Fall Break, Mrs. Kelli Coble's 3rd grade class had a cross-curriculum lesson using Candy Corn. Students learned about the history of Candy Corn, wrote an opinion piece on it, used it in several science experiments, and even made a catapult. The students learned a lot and may have done a little bit of snacking too!

Thanksgiving is 6 weeks away, but it's not to early to start training for the VHS Turkey Trot!! The 5K Turkey Trot will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, at Lion Stadium. There will be a Kids' Fun Run that starts at 9 a.m., with the 5K Turkey Trot set to start at 9:15 a.m. The deadline to register and secure a t-shirt is Nov. 13. The event is sponsored by Texas Farm Bureau Insurance in Vernon. The event is hosted by the Vernon High School National Honor Society and Student Council. All proceeds from the event benefit VISD at-risk youth.

Fifth grade students who are running to be an officer on the VES Student Council gave their campaign speeches to the VES student body Friday morning. A few candidates included props including a science experiment, a puzzle, and confetti. Students will cast their vote this week. Due to next week being a short school because of our VISD Fall Break, we have adjusted our schedule for offering special ice cream treats. Our cafeteria will be selling ice cream treats to our 2nd and 3rd grade students on Tuesday, and to our 4th and 5th grade students on Wednesday. Parents, please take note of this change.

Next week Vernon ISD has a short school week. We will have classes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and then dismiss school for our Fall Break. Our Fall Break is from Oct. 17 thru Oct. 21. We hope everyone has a great, relaxing time during the time away from school, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on our campuses and in offices on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
