We were just informed that Sand Road is closed from Franklin Dr. to Bismarck St. as the City of Vernon works on a water leak. It is expected to be closed for the rest of the day. If you are picking up students at McCord, Vernon Elementary or VHS you may need to change your route.

Here are a few more pics of our McCord Campus showing our Lion Spirit and having fun with today's Homecoming Week Dress Day "Twin Day".

The theme for today's Homecoming Week Dress Day was "Twin Day" and the McCord Elementary halls and classrooms were full of "twins" showing their Lion Spirit!!

Our students at McCord definitely got into the Homecoming spirit yesterday as they rocked the Red, White & Blue theme Dress Day. Each day this week of Homecoming there's a special theme for Dress Day.

After being postponed due to inclement weather in April, the 2nd Annual VISD Lions Roar Golf Tournament was held Friday at the Hillcrest Country Club. There was some scores as hot as the temperatures, with the team of Bryson Henry, Jeff Case, Jon Whitsitt and Tate Methvin claiming first place with a score of 55, 16-under par. Right behind them after shooting a 58 was the foursome of Nick Hutchins, Reba Hutchins, Kathy McClellan and Tom Boyd. Three teams shot 63 and tied for third and fourth place. After a card playoff, the team of Jim Parmer, Sandie Parmer, Ed Marsh and Danny Woodard finished third, with Charlie Boren, Mary Sue Gunn, George Pattison and Bowie Franks taking fourth. Vernon ISD would like to thank the sponsors for the golf tournament and all who participated in supporting Lions Roar!

Vernon ISD cares about our students' health -- both mental and physical. Students learn better when they're healthy both mentally and physically. We are now partnering with Texas Tech to bring a free telemedicine program to the community. For more information go to our website www.vernonisd.org click on the Menu tab and find Social Work Department.

A new mandate from the state nursing board has forced school nurses across the state to change how they provide over-the-counter medication to students. A doctor's note or prescription is now needed. To read the entire story, please follow this link https://www.vernonisd.org/article/1722645

Today VISD Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward stopped by Vernon Middle School to deliver a birthday card to custodian Elzie Wilson who is celebrating a birthday this month. Once or twice every month of this school year, Dr. Ward will be hand delivering birthday cards to employees who celebrate birthdays during that specific month. Dr. Ward enjoys this opportunity to get to know each VISD employee.

On the last Friday before the 2024-25 school year started, Vernon ISD held an Employee Convocation, with Supt. Dr. Kermit Ward laying out the district's game plan for the new year.
He recently shared some of his points in an article published in The Vernon Daily Record.
Here is the start of the article:
I am often asked, “What did you do during your summer break?” I find so much humor in the question, as it is rare for teachers and other school officials like myself to partake in the break our students have. For us, summers are used to sharpen our skill set and conference with like colleagues in order to learn what is going on in other districts.
Personally, I like to take time to read a good book that relates to my profession. This summer I read a book called “Shoe Dog” which is a story detailing, Nike founder Phil Knight’s struggles in creating Nike shoes. To read the rest of the article, please go to www.vernonisd.org

Ms. Fryman's 1st grade class took advantage of the heat last week and did a science experiment, class-building activity involving crayons. Each student chose a crayon to represent them, glued them to a poster and set the poster outside in the hot sun for the day. When they checked the poster at the end of the day, the crayons had melted into a pretty "painting." Ms. Fryman talked about the science behind what had happened, but also talked about how they were all individuals that were coming together this year as a class to make a special team.

We would like to invite all parents and guardians to come support our school by joining us for a PTO information and planning meeting. Please reach out to the school if you have any questions.

Vernon ISD substitute teachers attended a workshop this afternoon led by the VISD Curriculum Team. VISD is always in need of substitute teachers.
